HENSHIN  NINJAS

BEST IN SHOW - ANIME LA MASQUERADE 2008

Like most Underground skit ideas, this one started out as a joke. It was shortly after Comic-Con and we were gathered at Pipsi and Firien's apartment, sewing and watching some PGSM, the live-action Sailor Moon series. Naturally, we were all making fun of the horrible/wonderful show, and that's when Firien threw out the idea of an on-stage Sailor Moon transformation with stage ninjas... and of course we all thought it was too amazingly hilarious to pass up!

With the exception of Sparkle Pipsi's Sailor Moon costume, this skit was entirely low maintenance. We only met to practice the performance three or four times (which is NOTHING compared to our normal practice schedule...) and the henshin ninja "costumes" were a snap. The jumpsuits were poorly/quickly sewn out of $1-a-yard broadcloth by Tavariel and Pipsi within a couple hours, and then were painted by Miaka and Cindyrella on the floor of the garage, sweatshop style, to resemble the background of Sailor Moon's transformation sequence. A few cans of glitter spray and an amazing amount of pink foamie hearts later, the henshin ninjas were born. The star-shaped glitter sunglasses that Miaka found at a party store were a dazzling finishing touch!

Performing this one was a blast, because we succeded in catching the audience totally off-guard, as we had hoped. Pipsi's "Usagi" outfit that hid her Sailor Moon costume left the audience unsuspecting until she shouted "Moon Cosmic Power, MAKE UP!" and the ninjas exploded onto the stage. The transformation took place without a hitch, complete with magnetic odango covers and tiara! Our entire routine was only 30 seconds long, but the audience recieved us so well that we got to stay onstage for another 30 seconds for applause! We were quite thrilled to find that the audience had enjoyed it so much!

Underground Cosplay was awarded with Best of Show, and Pipsi's Sailor Moon costume was given an individual honor for Excellence in Workmanship. For a skit that we didn't think people would even understand (even though we still thought it was funny!) we were quite honored to recieve so much recognition!
